Flaws in Our Electoral System: An Analysis of the 2015 Canadian Election
Last Update: October 26th, 2019.
1) Project Goal
-
Visualize the 2015 election results and analyze for trends.
-
Analyze whether Canada's First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) electoral system creates issues for the electorate.
2) Data Source & Preparation
Data Sources
-
Data is from the Canadian Federal Government's Open Data portal: open.data.ca.
-
Electoral district boundaries visualized using the shape (.shp) file from the "2015 Federal Electoral Districts" dataset.
-
Election results data from the "42nd General Election: Official Voting Results" dataset.
Data Preparation
-
Election results data was prepared using the Python Pandas library: multi-informational fields were split into unique columns, metrics / calculations of interest were inserted, and multiple tables were joined to provide more context to each electoral district.
-
Data was then imported into Tableau, where the electoral boundaries shape file was joined with the election results, with the district ID as the primary key.
